Nitrite (NO2–), which is highly toxic to freshwater species in particular, is produced in the first stage of the bacterial process. If the nitrification process works, nitrite is converted to the comparatively non-toxic nitrate in the second stage. Increased levels of nitrite above 0.05 mg/l (ppm) are usually found in tanks that are in their maturation phase or in tanks with nitrate filters.

Nitrate affects the quality of the water in the aquarium: Higher concentrations of nitrate in saltwater aquariums will end up inhibiting the growth of delicate coral. An algal bloom is often the result of a high nitrate level in an aquarium. Some reef aquariums have ultra-low nutrient conditions – nitrate shortages can occur in cases such as these. Therefore, the nitrate concentration in the aquarium water should be tested regularly. It is advisable to keep the nitrate concentration in freshwater aquariums below 50 mg/l (ppm), whereas the concentration should not exceed 20 mg/l (ppm) in saltwater applications. When nurturing hard coral, the aim is to keep the nitrate concentration below 10 mg/l (ppm). Lower limits for nitrate depend on the general conditions in the aquarium.

With the high resolution Tropic Marin® Nitrite/Nitrate-Test Professional the nitrite and nitrate concentrations can be determined with a particularly high accuracy in the low concentration range between 0 and 1 ppm for nitrite and between 0 – 20 ppm for nitrate.

Benefits:

• Measurement range: NO2 0 – 1,0 mg/l (ppm)
• Measurement range: NO3 0 – 20 mg/l (ppm)
• Accuracy: NO2 0.002 mg/l•Accuracy: NO3 0.05 mg/l
• For determining the nitrite/nitrate concentration in aquaria
• Incl. comparator and phosphate standard to check function and shelf life of the test reagents
• Sufficient for approximately 50 applications

How to use:

Determining the nitrite level:

1.Shake the bottles before use!
2.Rinse out the glass cuvette with tap water and then several times with aquarium water.
3.Fill the glass cuvette with exactly 15 ml of aquarium water using the dosing syringe and place it in the comparator which serves as a cuvette stand.
4.Place the dropper tip on the 1 ml dosing syringe, add 1 ml test reagent A, close the glass cuvette using the stopper, briefly shake the solution and place it back in the comparator.
5.Then add 4 drops of test reagent C, close the glass cuvette once again, shake it briefly and place it back in the comparator.
6.After 3 minutes of development time, place the glass cuvette in the comparator on the white circles of the nitrite colour card in such a way that the second free opening on the comparator (without cuvette) is underneath the colour card (not on the colour fields) and the narrow end face of the comparator is facing the colour fields. By measuring these stages conclusions can be drawn about the “functioning” of the systems aquarium and pond. If the ammonium or nitrite level is too high it can lead to disturbances of the bacterial balance. Ammonium is not usually measurable in a well-kept aquarium with an effective biological filter or in a properly set up garden pond. A sensor changes reversibly from yellow to green to blue, relative to the ammonia concentration. No test kits, chemicals, or procedures are needed. The device detects less than 0.05 mg/L (ppm) free ammonia and alerts you to the #1 killer before any sign of stress. It lasts over a year. Marine or freshwater use.
In the absence of free ammonia the unit will assume a yellow or faint yellow-green color. It is normal for the dry sensor to have a greenish hue. It may take up to a few days for a dry sensor to equilibrate with the water. No sampling of water, chemicals, or test procedures are required. The presence of the free ammonia is detectable continuously with a response time of about 15 minutes. Response to decreasing ammonia is slower, requiring about 4 hours to go from TOXIC to SAFE on removal of ammonia.
INTERPRETATION: As little as 0.02 mg/L of free ammonia will produce a greenish hue on the detector surface. This corresponds to a total ammonia (both ionized and free ammonia) of 0.25 mg/L in marine water at pH 8.3. In freshwater at pH 7.0, this corresponds to 3.6 mg/L total ammonia. Free ammonia is much more toxic than ionized ammonia. As free ammonia, the ALERT color corresponds to about 0.05 mg/L, ALARM to about 0.2 mg/L, and TOXIC to about 0.5 mg/L. The ALERT concentration is tolerated for several days, ALARM for a few days, and TOXIC is rapidly harmful. This product is not recommended for use at acid pH
CARE: No care is required beyond removing algae with a clean, soft material. Avoid touching the sensor with fingers, since skin oils can damage it. Do not use bleach, soap, detergents or hard objects to clean the sensor. Some dye medications may discolor the sensor. Sensitivity improves with age, provided the unit is not allowed to dry out, however, drying does not permanently impair the unit. For maximum sensitivity, the unit should be read under natural daylight or daylight simulating light. Red enhancing light minimizes green and blue hues, decreasing the apparent sensitivity of the unit. The response of the unit may be checked by holding it briefly over the mouth of an ammonia bottle: color should develop rapidly.

This kit measures total (NH3 and NH4+) and free ammonia (NH3 only) down to 0.05 mg/L and is virtually interference free in marine and fresh water. Any level of nitrite above 0 can be harmful to your fish as this chemical binds with the haemoglobin in the bloodstream, reducing the amount of oxygen the fish can access. Nitrite toxicity is sometimes referred to as ‘brown blood disease’, due to the change in the colour of the fish’s blood.

Measuring nitrite with a medium range colorimeter tester provides immediate insight into whether the levels in your tank are too high, covering a comprehensive range. If the test is performed correctly, the result is absolutely reliable. With the nitrite result, experience shows that an additional drop test measurement (with JBL PROAQUATEST NO2 Nitrite) is a good idea if the JBL ProScan result does NOT show 0, as this value needs to be 100% reliable (nitrite is fatally toxic for fish from 0.4 mg/l).

Possible errors during use:
When removing the test strip from the water, do not shake it vertically, as the wet colours will then run into the other colour fields. It needs to be drained off HORIZONALLY and carefully. Without dripping off, the drops on the colour fields reflect the light too strongly and lead to inaccurate results. Photographing the test strip on the colour chart should ideally be done in daylight. But even more important is that the incidence of light is uniform and does not show partial shadows and partial sunlight. If this were the case, the colours on the colour chart would be illuminated differently.

The JBL ProScan app is available in the following languages: de, en, fr, nl, es, it, pt, ru, cs, pl, tr and ja.

Refill test strips for analysis via smartphone for freshwater aquariums

Water analysis and diagnosis via smartphone: easy and safe control of the water values in freshwater aquariums.
